Since last year and the advent of the pandemic which affected the whole world, distance learning or remote working has become a habit for millions of workers. The situation is the same for students and schoolchildren in schools and training centres. During lockdown periods, it was necessary to quickly adapt to this new mode of operation.
Nowadays, distance learning has become popular. With the technological advancement, we have several tools to work in a team or alone online.
Among the new technologies, videoconferencing is one of the most democratized. Many free tools like Google Meet, Jit.si, Zoom and other paid versions exist. From February 2020 to January 2021, Zoom earned $ 2.65 billion in revenue, more than 327% of the previous year. This gives us an overview of the development of this digital sector.
Apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Instagram had entered into videoconference mode, by allowing multiple video calls (up to 4 so far for Instagram, 8 people for WhatsApp and 50 people for Telegram).
To take advantage of distance learning, a computer is widely recommended. However, tablets and smartphones remain alternative solutions. A good internet connexion is also important (via Wi-Fi, Ethernet cable, mobile network, etc.) Thus, it is possible to learn from anywhere in the world.
Hygiene, autonomy et comfort, the advantages of distance learning
This solution is very practical for limiting contact between people and fight against the transmission of COVID-19 and its variants; while continuing to learn. No need to meet in a group in the same training room. It is also a gain of time for employees and students, because they no longer have to travel and therefore save hours of transport.
Another advantage of distance learning for enthusiasts, is autonomy. The student is master of the management of his time. Courses are generally made available online to student who only has to log into their training account at any time to take their course. This gives him great flexibility in organizing his personal and professional life.
Students keep the contact with the training centre through emails, telephone, and video conferencing for a better monitoring of learning process. It does not mean that the student is left.
Which online training to choose?
Online training, like those in face to face, are open to everybody. For those who are looking for a job, or those who are in retraining or professional development.
The training choice is much diversified today. Thousands of distancing courses exist. It is highly important to identify a the sector that corresponds to our professional project and our development; particularly those that are interesting on the job market.
For example, the CNFDI website offers more than 250 distance learning diploma courses in various fields such as mechanics, electricity, paramedics, animals, fashion...
Distance learning, really for everyone?
This is not a 100% effective solution for everyone, there are some disadvantages with online training. You need to be able to study in a calm environment, which is not necessarily the case for families. Some people actually need real interaction with others for morale or to motivate themselves to study.
